Freight costs took a visible bite out of several major US retailers' third-quarter results. Amazon said on its earnings call that fuel costs and line-haul rates for long-distance trucking between facilities pushed shipping expenses up 11% year over year, against a 12% increase in units. Excluding fuel and line-haul inflation, shipping costs rose 8% — meaning better inventory placement, shorter shipping distances and package consolidation let the company absorb extra volume without a proportional cost increase.

Tractor Supply was more directly exposed. The company attributed gross-margin pressure primarily to higher transportation and fuel costs, along with pricing investments. Gross margin fell to 36.4% from 37.4% a year earlier, even as sales rose 5.1%.

Carter's ran into a timing problem instead: merchandise arrived late. Management said port congestion and container availability issues left inventory somewhat below plan, at $587 million, down 11% year over year. The company said the disruptions had not materially affected its business to date.

All three point to the same window — pre-holiday stocking. Higher freight squeezes margins; late merchandise misses its selling window and gets discounted. For shippers moving goods from China to the US, the fuel and line-haul increases are already baked into retailers' landed costs. Heading into peak, arrival-time volatility from port congestion may matter more than the rate itself, especially for cargo that has to hit holiday shelves.
