U.S. freight payment and analytics firm Cass Information Systems reported a 19% year-over-year rise in third-quarter earnings per share, with transportation dollar volumes up 14.5%, signaling a recovery in the freight market after a prolonged downturn.

What Happened

Cass posted third-quarter net income of $10.6 million, or $0.81 per share, up 19% from a year earlier. CFO Mike Normile attributed the growth to higher freight rates, rising fuel surcharges and elevated interest rates.

The average value of a traditional freight invoice rose by about $150 compared with the same quarter last year. Roughly $40, or about 25% of the increase, came from fuel surcharges, with the remainder reflecting contract rates repricing in a higher-rate environment.

Normile noted that September's average invoice was higher than the third-quarter average, suggesting momentum may carry into the fourth quarter. Because Cass processes invoices 30 to 45 days before payment, rising rates continue to flow through revenue via payment float and financial fees.

Background

Cass processes freight bills and payments for shippers and carriers, and its data is closely watched as a gauge of U.S. freight volumes and pricing. The industry had endured near-zero interest rates and an extended freight recession that weighed on rates and volumes.

As contract rates reprice higher and fuel surcharges climb, Cass's invoice values and interest income have improved together. About 70% of the company's funding is non-interest-bearing, and with the 10-year Treasury yield above 5%, its net interest margin topped 4%. Normile said he expects rates to stay higher for longer. The company is also investing part of the windfall in technology, including AI-enabled data extraction.

Impact on Shippers

For Chinese exporters and cross-border e-commerce sellers shipping to the U.S., Cass's data sends a direct signal: both contract rates and fuel surcharges in U.S. domestic transportation are rising, and cost pressure from tail-haul trucking and inland transfers may gradually feed into first-mile quotes. Shippers without fuel surcharge terms locked into their quotes may see actual bills come in higher than expected.

On transit times, a rate recovery often comes with higher volumes, and U.S. inland truck capacity may tighten during peak season, raising the risk of longer waits for truck appointments and warehouse delivery after container pickup. Customs clearance itself is not directly affected by rates, but higher transport costs may prompt some shippers to adjust declared values or channel choices; shippers should ensure documents match the actual cargo to avoid under-declaration risks driven by cost pressure.

Recommendations

Shippers should confirm with their logistics providers how fuel surcharges are calculated and adjusted in ocean-truck and truck-delivery quotes, and specify a cap or renegotiation mechanism in contracts. For peak-season inbound cargo, book space and prepare inventory earlier to allow buffer time for tail-haul delivery. Also verify commercial invoices, packing lists and customs declarations to avoid last-minute changes driven by cost fluctuations.
