Container spot rates from China to India have begun to cool as seasonal import demand linked to India's festival consumption loses momentum, with bookings from major Chinese load ports to JNPA on the west coast and Chennai on the east down 10%-20%, according to industry data.

What Happened

Rates for a 40ft shipment from Shanghai to JNPA are now around $3,200 per box, down from about $3,800 a month ago, while Shanghai-Chennai rates have dropped to $3,200 from $3,900. Rates from other Asian hubs are also trending down: Hong Kong-JNPA is around $3,600/40ft versus $3,800 a month earlier; Singapore-JNPA is about $3,400/40ft, 5% lower than September; and Hong Kong-Chennai has fallen 15% to $3,300/40ft.

However, executives at leading intra-Asia carriers said the moderate correction should not be seen as the start of a broader cyclical downturn, as trades from Asia to India and the Middle East remain caught up in port challenges and delays. One source noted that vessels continue to face operational strain at the Persian Gulf end, with delays at Khor Fakkan not improving. Vessel bunching amid sliding sailing schedules has recently added berthing pressure at JNPA.

Background

India's imports from China by value rose 23% year on year in the first three quarters, underscoring strong trade flows that have supported container demand. India's exports to China have also gained pace in recent years, improving backhaul yields for regional carriers. The demand boom has driven an influx of new capacity into the tradelane, mainly connecting intra-Asia markets to JNPA and Chennai. India's fiscal year 2026-27 H1 exports were up 18.5% year on year, driven by electronics, engineering goods, chemicals, and agricultural products.

Impact on Shippers

For Chinese exporters to the US, the rate decline on China-India routes does not directly alter transpacific logistics costs, but it reflects changes in intra-Asia capacity deployment and port efficiency. If carriers shift capacity from intra-Asia routes back to the transpacific, it could add supply and put some pressure on US-bound rates. Meanwhile, port congestion and schedule disruptions in India may affect transit times for cargo routed through or linked to India, requiring attention to schedule reliability.

On customs clearance, fluctuations in Indian import demand and trade policy changes could affect documentation requirements. Shippers with India-related cargo should verify clearance documents in advance to avoid extra costs from port delays.

Recommendations

Shippers are advised to closely monitor carrier capacity adjustments and schedule changes, build buffer time for time-sensitive cargo, confirm berthing and transshipment arrangements with carriers for India-routed shipments, and double-check documentation for smooth clearance. For specific rates and schedules, refer to the latest carrier announcements.
