U.S. truckload carrier Heartland Express reported a return to profitability in the third quarter, marking its first net profit since 2023 that was not driven by gains from equipment and terminal sales, as industry capacity continues to shrink.

What Happened

The North Liberty, Iowa-based company reported third-quarter revenue of $179.5 million, down 9% year over year and below the $191.4 million consensus estimate. Excluding fuel surcharges, revenue was 15% lower year over year.

Net income came in at $1 million, or 1 cent per share, a turnaround from an $8.3 million loss (11 cents per share) in the year-ago quarter. Analysts had expected earnings per share of 3 cents. Higher gains on equipment sales contributed about 1 cent to EPS year over year.

The adjusted operating ratio—operating expenses as a percentage of revenue—was 97.6%, 590 basis points better year over year. The company cited cost pressures from fuel, maintenance and repairs, and employee-related expenses during the period.

Background

CEO Mike Gerdin said in a news release that the improved financial results reflect stronger freight volumes and better customer pricing resulting from ongoing industry capacity reductions. However, he noted that the positive impacts of ongoing contract negotiations are not expected to be fully reflected in operating results until 2027.

Heartland does not host quarterly calls or provide operating metrics such as utilization and pricing. Industry data show that tender rejections—a proxy for truck capacity—indicate a tightening truckload market, while dry van contract rate indices have also been trending higher.

Heartland has been deleveraging since acquiring two carriers in the summer of 2022. In the third quarter, it reduced net debt by $21 million to $73 million. It ended the period with $89 million available on an untapped revolving credit facility and was in compliance with financial covenants. The company continues to replace equipment, with an average tractor age of 2.3 years, down from 2.6 years a year earlier.

Impact on Shippers

For Chinese exporters and cross-border e-commerce sellers shipping to the U.S., the contraction in U.S. truckload capacity and rising rates could put upward pressure on last-mile trucking costs. Sellers relying on U.S. overseas warehouses for transshipment may see higher costs for moving goods from ports to warehouses and from warehouses to FBA centers or consumers.

At the same time, reduced capacity could lead to fluctuations in pickup and delivery times, and securing truck capacity during peak season may become more difficult. If customs-cleared cargo is not connected to drayage in a timely manner, demurrage or storage fees may apply. Shippers should monitor changes in U.S. inland transportation costs and transit times and factor them into overall logistics budgets.

Recommendations

Shippers are advised to plan U.S. last-mile transportation in advance, confirm capacity and pricing with overseas warehouses and trucking providers before peak season, and avoid last-minute bookings that can drive up costs. For time-sensitive cargo, consider pre-stocking at overseas warehouses to shorten response times. Also, verify that customs documents and pickup appointments are aligned to reduce extra fees caused by drayage delays.
