According to Kpler's quarterly iron ore report, major iron ore producers showed sharp divergence in Q3 2026, with Australian miners generally outperforming their Atlantic peers, while Vale faces pressure to cut its full-year guidance due to declining exports.

What Happened

Rio Tinto exported 83.9 million tonnes from Western Australia in Q3, up 2% y/y. Despite tensions with China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG), overall Pilbara shipments were largely unaffected. China still accounted for 81.5% of Rio's WA exports, broadly unchanged from a year earlier. Kpler expects Rio to report 86.2 Mt of Pilbara sales in Q3, up 2.2% y/y, keeping the midpoint of its 323-338 Mt full-year guidance achievable.

BHP posted record fiscal first-quarter exports as Jimblebar Fines fully recovered. FMG was the exception among Australian miners, with a 7% y/y export decline due to its dispute with CMRG, partially cushioned by diversification.

Vale exported 77.3 Mt from Brazil in Q3, down 7.3% y/y, the sharpest annual contraction since 2020. Shipments to East Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe all declined y/y, with India the main exception at a record 3.2 Mt. Kpler noted that Chinese crude steel production is expected to fall around 4% y/y, iron ore import growth was the second lowest since 2022, and rising freight costs and competition are raising the prospect of a guidance cut for Vale.

Background

CMRG asked some Chinese steelmakers in early August to suspend negotiations with Rio Tinto and in early September to hold off purchases of Pilbara Blend. So far, the impact has been largely confined to commercial negotiations, but shipments of Pilbara Blend fines are starting to slow. Meanwhile, Rio's Simandou project saw exports surge 66% q/q to 8.74 Mt, with further increases expected in Q4 as permanent crushing facilities come online.

Impact on Shippers

The direct impact on cross-border e-commerce sellers is limited, but indirect effects warrant attention: first, an escalation in China-Australia iron ore trade tensions could affect bulk carrier capacity allocation, potentially spilling over into container space supply; second, falling Brazilian exports and rising freight costs could push up rates on related routes, indirectly affecting ocean parcel and ocean truck delivery costs; third, changes in Chinese steelmakers' procurement pace could affect the timing of related product exports, requiring attention to customs clearance and documentation requirements.

Recommendations

Shippers are advised to closely monitor China-Australia iron ore negotiations and key route rate trends, confirm Q4 space and pricing with logistics providers in advance to avoid delays from capacity reallocation, and for orders involving steel or related products, verify destination customs requirements early and allow sufficient lead time.
