US less-than-truckload carrier Saia reported record quarterly revenue of $982.5 million, up 17% year over year, and unveiled a $250 million share repurchase program, signaling a shift from years of heavy network investment toward profitability and capital returns.

What Happened

According to FreightWaves, President and CEO Fritz Holgrefe said earnings per share came in at $3.41, with an operating ratio of 87.6. Revenue growth was driven by fuel surcharges, core pricing initiatives and tonnage gains.

Tonnage per workday rose about 8.9% year over year to a record, while revenue per shipment climbed 5.8%. Shipments per workday grew less than 1%, a deliberate outcome of the carrier's push to attract heavier freight from customers that value premium service.

Service metrics improved as well: the claims ratio fell 40% year over year and the internally tracked Net Promoter Score rose 15%. Facilities opened since 2022 saw operating ratio improve roughly 40 basis points, with operating income up about 22%.

Background

Since 2022, Saia has added more than 40 facilities and relocated 25, operating 219 locations across the lower 48 states. The company says 60% of its locations now sit within 50 miles of 60% of the addressable US market, up from 35% in 2017. Management said future expansion will be more measured, focused on maturing new facilities into established markets with double-digit share.

The Los Angeles region remains a drag. It is Saia's longest length of haul and highest revenue-per-bill market, but has stayed soft year over year, creating a mix headwind. Management attributed part of the weakness to modal shift and part to pricing discipline, noting some freight does not fit its network economics at current rate expectations.

Impact on Shippers

On transit time, denser coverage and improving efficiency at new facilities mean fewer handoffs and broader reach in the US inland LTL segment, giving shippers more pickup and delivery options for truck-delivered freight.

On cost, revenue per shipment rising 5.8% while tonnage outpaces shipment counts shows the carrier is selecting heavier, service-sensitive freight. Shippers of light, low-density cargo may see less negotiating room, while heavy, dense freight is more likely to secure reasonable rates, with chargeable weight and density factor playing a larger role in pricing.

Customs clearance is not directly affected, but tighter freight selection by tail-mile LTL carriers may push some low-density, low-value cargo toward other channels near US West Coast ports, so shippers should confirm carrier acceptance of their cargo profile in advance.

Recommendations

Shippers moving cargo to the US inland should check cargo density and chargeable weight before booking, optimize packaging to reduce light and bulky freight, and confirm acceptable cargo types and delivery windows with tail-mile providers, especially for Los Angeles-bound freight. Given stricter pricing discipline among LTL carriers, build rate-adjustment clauses into contracts to absorb potential quote volatility.
