Samsara announced this week that Agent Studio, its no-code builder for chat and voice AI agents, is now available to all customers at no added cost. The company said usage of AI agents on its platform has grown about sevenfold since June, reflecting accelerating demand from fleet operators seeking to automate safety coaching, compliance monitoring and driver communications.

What Happened

According to FreightWaves, Agent Studio lets operators build, test, launch and set permissions on an agent in minutes using plain-language instructions rather than custom code. Agents can trigger automatically — for example, delivering yard entry instructions when a truck crosses a geofence — or respond on demand to queries about fuel efficiency, safety scores or hours-of-service status.

Brendan O'Driscoll, VP of Platform AI at Samsara, said voice has become the dominant format for physical operations, outpacing chat agents because drivers and site workers need hands-free access to information. He cited Jordan Carriers, a fleet of roughly 1,000 drivers, which deployed a voice agent to automate safety coaching that previously required manual outreach to as many as 140 to 150 drivers at any given time. The carrier reported about 30% fewer crashes in that cohort of drivers.

On compliance, O'Driscoll highlighted customer Aspertrum Foods, which uses an agent to predict hours-of-service violations up to three hours in advance by tracking remaining stops, drive time and total shift time in real time. The proactive approach has cut manual review time by roughly 80% to 85%, allowing managers to authorize extensions or reroute drivers before a violation is logged.

Samsara said 30% to 40% of customers who set up one agent go on to run two or more within a short period. The company said its near-term focus is helping operators identify a first use case — often a start-of-shift briefing — before expanding to fuel efficiency, safety scoring and other workflows.

Background

North American freight has long faced driver shortages and regulatory pressure, with hours-of-service and safety scoring rules keeping fleet management costs high. Safety coaching and compliance reviews have traditionally relied on manual calls, reports and after-the-fact audits, which are slow and hard to intervene in real time. As large language models and voice interaction mature, logistics software vendors are embedding AI agents into daily operations to replace some repetitive manual work.

Samsara's move to offer its no-code agent builder for free is seen as a strategy to increase platform stickiness and push customers from single functions toward multi-agent workflows. The sevenfold usage growth in a few months suggests fleet-side acceptance is rising.

Impact on Shippers

For Chinese cross-border sellers relying on US inland trucking for last-mile delivery, such tools will not directly change freight rates or capacity in the short term, but they may indirectly affect trucking timeliness and stability. If carriers use AI agents to reduce crashes and compliance risks, vehicle availability and on-time performance could improve, potentially reducing peak-season delays caused by driver violations or accidents.

On cost and customs, AI agents themselves do not touch tariffs or clearance, but better compliance monitoring helps fleets maintain good safety and operating records, lowering the risk of cargo detention due to carrier qualification issues. Shippers using overseas warehouses plus truck delivery may consider whether partner fleets adopt similar digital management as a reference for service stability.

Recommendations

Shippers selecting US last-mile trucking providers should factor fleet digital management and safety compliance capabilities into their evaluation, favoring partners with real-time hours-of-service monitoring and safety coaching. Before peak season, confirm capacity and contingency plans with trucking channels in advance, and specify delay liability and compensation terms in contracts to reduce stockout risks from carrier operational fluctuations.
