The world's largest battery-electric ship has entered commercial service, completing its first revenue crossing between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Colonia, Uruguay, on October 22, according to foreign media reports.

What Happened

The 130-metre high-speed catamaran China Zorrilla was built by Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania for ferry operator Buquebus. It can carry up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the River Plate using only battery power, with no conventional marine engines.

Its energy storage system exceeds 40 megawatt-hours and comprises more than 250 tonnes of batteries, driving eight electrically powered waterjets. Dedicated high-power charging facilities at terminals on both sides of the river allow the vessel to recharge between crossings.

An official ceremony was held in Buenos Aires on October 21, attended by Incat management, Buquebus representatives and maritime and government officials from Argentina and Uruguay. The ship began carrying paying passengers the following day.

Background

The project underwent major design changes during construction. It was originally specified with dual-fuel engines capable of burning diesel and liquefied natural gas, but was later redesigned for fully electric propulsion, requiring substantial engineering work. Incat said the vessel proves that large, high-capacity commercial ships can operate on electric power.

Incat is also building three 129-metre battery-electric ferries for Danish operator Molslinjen and two 78-metre hybrid-electric vessels at its Hobart yard, suggesting electric vessel construction is moving from one-off projects toward series production.

Impact on Shippers

As a passenger and vehicle ferry, the vessel does not carry containerised cargo, so its direct effect on transpacific capacity and rates is limited. Its significance lies in demonstrating that large-capacity battery propulsion can work on fixed routes supported by shore-based charging, offering an engineering reference for future short-sea ro-ro and feeder operations.

For shippers moving goods from China to the United States, ocean costs and transit times will continue to depend on the conventional fuel fleet and port efficiency in the near term, and there is no need to adjust shipping plans because of this technical milestone. Over the longer term, shippers may watch how electric and alternative-fuel vessels penetrate feeder and short-haul segments, and how that affects port charging infrastructure and sailing schedules.

Recommendations

Shippers should continue to book China-US lanes through existing channels while monitoring carriers' public disclosures on newbuildings and alternative fuels as a reference for future capacity structure and surcharge changes. Customers involved in ro-ro transport should confirm vessel types and schedules with their service providers and avoid conflating progress in electric passenger ferries with freight capacity.
