A report released at the Global Maritime Forum's Annual Summit 2026 in Shanghai shows that China has quickly become a global leader in green shipping corridors, with nearly one-fifth of the world's corridor initiatives connecting to a Chinese port. The report notes China's strengths in green fuels, technology pathways and cross-value-chain collaboration, but customer demand remains a weak point.

What Happened

The report, titled 'Green shipping corridors: How China is re-energising the global movement,' was launched at the Global Maritime Forum's Annual Summit 2026 in Shanghai in October 2026. It measures corridor viability against four key building blocks: viable zero-emission fuel and technology pathways, cross-value-chain collaboration, an enabling policy environment, and customer demand.

China performs strongly in three of the four building blocks: it is an early and cost-competitive producer of green methanol and ammonia, is at the forefront of marine battery development, is highly engaged in cross-value-chain collaborations, and is rapidly strengthening policies related to green hydrogen. However, customer demand for zero-emission fuels (the fourth building block) lags behind potential supply levels.

Jesse Fahnestock, director of decarbonisation at the Global Maritime Forum, said that when the organisation began tracking green corridor progress in 2022, China was involved in three announced initiatives—now that number has risen to more than 20. He noted that China's advancements in green fuel development and international collaboration could be success factors for these initiatives.

Background

The concept of green shipping corridors was first introduced in a 2021 report for the Getting to Zero Coalition, aiming to drive shipping decarbonisation through coordinated fuels, infrastructure and policy on specific routes. In recent years, as International Maritime Organization emission targets tighten, major shipping nations and ports have been positioning themselves in green corridors. China, with its extensive port network, shipbuilding capacity and new energy supply chain, has built strong competitiveness on the supply side, but actual demand for green shipping has not yet kept pace.

Impact on Shippers

For cross-border e-commerce sellers and foreign trade factories using China-US routes, the advancement of green shipping corridors will not directly change freight rate structures in the short term, but may affect carriers' capacity deployment and fuel surcharges in the medium to long term. As pilots for green methanol, ammonia fuel and battery-powered vessels expand, new green service options may emerge on some routes, and shippers should monitor carriers' green surcharges and route adjustments.

On customs clearance and compliance, the US market is paying increasing attention to carbon emissions of imported goods, and green shipping credentials may become a plus for some buyers or platforms in the future. Shippers should watch for changes in customer demand for low-carbon transport and learn about carriers' green service capabilities in advance.

Recommendations

Shippers are advised to regularly monitor major carriers' announcements on green shipping corridors and assess the cost impact of green surcharges; when communicating with US buyers, they can proactively understand their preferences for low-carbon transport to prepare for possible green service options. Meanwhile, stay sensitive to fuel types and vessel efficiency information to make more flexible decisions when booking space.
