Suezmax tanker sales activity has picked up sharply this year, with transactions up 35% year on year to 124 vessels from 92 in the same period last year, as a strong VLCC market pushes buyers toward the cheaper segment, according to industry reports.

What Happened

The average age of vessels sold this year is 15 years. On the buying side, Greece accounts for 21% of purchases, followed by the UAE at 15% and China at 8%. Greece is also the most active seller with 33% of sales, including nine Suezmax vessels offloaded by Dynacom; China accounts for 9% and Belgium 6%.

Notable recent deals include the Achilleas (158,400 DWT, built June 2010), sold by Sun Enterprises for USD 98.0 million, and the Maran Poseidon (158,300 DWT, built January 2010), sold by Maran Tankers for USD 98.5 million.

Values for a 15-year-old, 160,000 DWT Suezmax have risen about 134.58% since the start of the year, from USD 45.6 million to roughly USD 107 million. One-year timecharter rates are up 301% year on year, from about USD 40,151 per day to USD 161,054 per day.

Background

Rising VLCC values and earnings have diverted attention to Suezmax tonnage, narrowing the price gap between the two segments. Suezmax tankers can transit the Suez Canal fully laden, linking the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Europe without the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope, and their size gives access to a wider range of ports and terminals. Disrupted trading patterns have made reliable tonnage harder to find, allowing owners to lock in higher rates on longer commitments while sellers capitalise on asset appreciation.

Impact on Shippers

The rally in tanker values and rates mainly affects the ocean cost of crude and refined products. It does not directly transmit to containerised cross-border e-commerce cargo, but can feed through fuel prices, fleet deployment and overall market sentiment. Exporters of liquid chemicals, oils and fats that rely on tankers or tank containers face higher long-term charter costs and more volatile spot rates, with shorter booking windows.

Customs clearance itself is unaffected, but companies handling both bulk commodities and finished goods should keep documentation and declaration standards separate across transport modes.

Recommendations

Shippers with liquid bulk or tank container export needs should review capacity plans for Q4 through Q1 and consider locking in medium- to long-term space or rates for predictable volumes, while monitoring bunker surcharges and building cost buffers into quotations. Container exporters to the US can maintain normal stocking schedules but should watch for delayed pass-through of higher ocean costs into last-mile delivery pricing.
