U.S. refrigerated truckload carrier Marten Transport reported third-quarter net income of $2.9 million, as rising fuel, driver pay and health insurance costs offset improving supply-demand fundamentals and rate gains, sending shares down 7% in midday trading.

What Happened

Marten reported net income of $2.9 million, or 4 cents per share, for the third quarter, a penny higher than a year ago but 2 cents below consensus. The company said higher fuel and payroll costs, including driver pay increases, were only partially offset by gains on equipment sales, resulting in a $3.7 million net hit to income, or 4.5 cents per share.

Consolidated revenue rose 1% year over year to $223 million. The 2025 sale of its intermodal unit to Hub Group created a $9.9 million revenue headwind. One-way truckload revenue increased 12% to $117 million, or 4% excluding fuel surcharges, as revenue per tractor per week (ex-fuel) rose 15% on a 9% smaller fleet. Revenue per loaded mile (ex-fuel) increased 14% to $3.02. The segment's operating ratio (ex-fuel) was 100.2%, still unprofitable but 200 basis points better year over year.

The dedicated segment saw revenue (ex-fuel) decline 9% year over year as an 11% drop in truck count was only partly offset by a 2% increase in revenue per tractor. Revenue per loaded mile fell 2% to $2.41, and the operating ratio worsened 360 basis points to 97.6%. Brokerage revenue was flat at $39 million, with a 15% decline in shipments offset by a 17% increase in revenue per load; its operating ratio improved 110 basis points to 94.8%.

Background

Chairman and CEO Randy Marten said the truckload freight market has tightened sharply since earlier this year as renewed enforcement of federal and state laws removes noncompliant and unqualified driver capacity. The company is securing higher pricing for premium services amid the early stages of a market upcycle. As the only public carrier in the U.S. reefer market, Marten is viewed as an industry bellwether. Its shares are down 37% from a mid-June peak.

Impact on Shippers

For U.S. domestic refrigerated truckload shippers, tighter capacity and higher compliance costs are pushing rates up, requiring higher freight budgets for temperature-controlled goods. For Chinese cross-border sellers shipping to the U.S., last-mile trucking costs for refrigerated products via overseas warehouses may rise; dry cargo is less directly affected, but overall tight truck capacity could lengthen pickup and delivery times. Customs clearance is not directly affected, but shippers should watch for carrier surcharge adjustments due to cost pressure.

Recommendations

Shippers should plan U.S. last-mile transportation in advance, budget higher freight costs for temperature-controlled goods, and confirm fuel and peak-season surcharge levels with carriers. Optimizing load factors and reducing empty miles, and comparing ocean-truck delivery versus trucking options for transit time and cost, can help avoid delays caused by capacity tightness.
