US less-than-truckload carrier Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) recorded its first year-over-year daily tonnage growth in more than two years in September, but executives cautioned that a broader demand inflection is still needed to restore upcycle-level results.

What Happened

According to foreign media reports, ODFL's daily tonnage rose about 1.6% year over year in September and carried into October, after declining roughly 1% in both July and August. Third-quarter earnings per share came in at $1.65, beating consensus, while revenue reached $1.59 billion, up 13% year over year and up 5% excluding fuel surcharges.

Daily tonnage was flat year over year, with a 2% increase in weight per shipment offsetting a 2% decline in shipments. Revenue per hundredweight rose 13% year over year, or 5% excluding fuel, slightly above the company's guidance of 4% to 4.5%. ODFL implemented a 4.9% general rate increase on October 5.

The carrier said it currently holds more than 35% excess door capacity and expects to take market share as capacity-constrained peers experience service failures. Management guided fourth-quarter revenue to a range of $1.54 billion to $1.58 billion, above consensus.

Background

The LTL sector has endured a prolonged demand slump, with some freight shifting to a depressed truckload market. As manufacturing data has expanded for several consecutive months, some of that lost freight is returning to LTL networks. However, diesel prices were about 48% higher year over year in the quarter, inflating fuel surcharge revenue and raising concerns that carrier earnings may be overstated and could moderate once energy prices recede.

ODFL management said a more material demand inflection requires relief in energy costs. Shares fell about 5.5% by midday on the earnings release, reflecting investor doubts about industry growth prospects.

Impact on Shippers

For Chinese cross-border sellers relying on US inland delivery as their last mile, LTL carriers' pricing discipline is clearly strengthening: the general rate increase is already in effect, and elevated fuel surcharges mean per-shipment trucking costs are unlikely to fall near term. Shippers using ocean-plus-truck or US truck delivery channels may continue to see high fuel surcharge components in last-mile quotes.

On transit times, top carriers with surplus capacity offer relatively stable service, but some capacity-tight carriers are already showing fulfillment problems, which could delay LTL consolidation, transfers and appointment pickups during peak season. Customs clearance itself is not directly affected, but poor last-mile connections after clearance can lengthen overall door-to-door transit times.

Recommendations

Shippers should lock in US inland trucking rates for the fourth quarter and early next year, prioritizing truck delivery channels with ample capacity and a solid fulfillment record. For time-sensitive cargo, build in a longer last-mile buffer and verify how fuel surcharges are calculated and when they take effect before booking, to avoid cost overruns from surcharge adjustments.
