Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) reported a 45.1% year-over-year rise in third-quarter liner revenue to $3.28 billion, with the trans-Pacific trade delivering the largest increase at 71.8%, according to an operational update.

What Happened

In the quarter ended Sept. 30, OOCL handled 2.12 million TEUs, up 9% year over year, while average revenue per TEU rose 33.1%. Loadable capacity increased 3.6%, and the overall load factor improved 4.2 percentage points.

By trade, trans-Pacific revenue climbed 71.8% to $1.44 billion, with volumes up 13.1% to 595,139 TEUs. Asia-Europe saw the fastest volume growth at 15.4% to 399,162 TEUs, with revenue up 45% to $695.8 million. Intra-Asia and Australasia remained the largest region by volume at 981,336 TEUs, up 4.6%, with revenue up 23.7% to $947.6 million. Trans-Atlantic volumes rose 7.3% to 147,008 TEUs, and revenue increased 11.9% to $201.8 million.

For the first nine months of 2026, liner revenue rose 18.9% to $7.96 billion, with volumes up 6.5% to 6.25 million TEUs and average revenue per TEU up 11.6%. Trans-Pacific revenue increased 27% to $3.16 billion, while Asia-Europe revenue rose 19% to $1.70 billion.

Background

OOCL, majority-owned by China's COSCO Shipping Holdings, is seen as a bellwether for transpacific and Asia-Europe demand. Revenue growth outpaced volume growth in every region, indicating higher average revenue per TEU as the main driver, though the company did not specify market conditions behind the gains.

Impact on Shippers

The strong trans-Pacific volume and revenue growth points to robust demand on the China-US lane. For shippers, space could be tight in the near term, especially during peak season, requiring earlier booking. Higher revenue per TEU suggests spot rates remain elevated year over year, keeping cost pressure on. No new customs policy changes were noted, but concentrated volumes may lengthen port handling times.

Recommendations

Shippers are advised to book 2-3 weeks in advance, prioritize long-term contracts or stable space, consider ocean-parcel or ocean-truck combinations for time-sensitive cargo, and double-check documentation to avoid customs delays during volume peaks.
